What Does It Mean To Be “Illegal” In America?
You can’t minister among the Latino population in the U.S. for long without coming face-to-face with one of the largest issues affecting Hispanics: immigration. Al Jazeera’s program, Fault Lines, has done a great documentary asking the question, “What does it mean to be ‘illegal’?” “What does it mean to be American?”
I highly recommend this 24 minute documentary for anyone wanting to learn more about the issue of undocumented immigrants in America. To minister effectively you have to get this right. To get it right you have to learn not just the statistics, but the stories as well.
One of the best sections of the documentary is when Angel, a recently deported 20 year old Mexican who has lived in America since he was 3 months old shares how this issue makes him feel:
It’s sad ’cause I’m American by heart. But being out there [America] I feel not wanted. But being out here [Mexico] I feel not part of this. So it’s like I’m really not wanted there and I don’t feel a part of here. I really don’t know where I’m at right now.
Watch the documentary. I’d love to have a dialogue with how you are wrestling through this issue on your campus, with your staff team, and in your ministry nationwide.
