Being White: Finding Our Place in a Multiethnic World

Many staff that work with Destino movements are White. But many of us have never recognized it until we started to do Destino. How does being white affect how we relate to ethnic minorities? How does it affect how we do ministry?

One of the best books I’ve read on the subject is Being White: Finding Our Place in a Multiethnic World. Written by two staff with InterVarsity, it helps White folks not only begin to realize they have an ethnicity themselves, but how to then cross cultures well and create meaningful relationships.

The authors give a five step process for beginning to grow in “being white”:

  1. Encounter
  2. Friendship
  3. Displacement
  4. White Identity
  5. The Just Community

I recommend this book for anyone who is just beginning to discover what they’ve seen in the mirror all along…they’re White!
