“The most important challenge for the United States is to recognize itself as a multi-cultural, multi-racial, multi-ethnic society.” – Octavio Paz, Mexican Poet (quoted in the above video at the 9:45 mark)

This video from 2004 of Jorge Ramos, the Univision news anchor, with Charlie Rose offers a great insight into America today. It is hard for us to realize that we are a mult-cultural country. It is hard for us to value people from different backgrounds and see them as truly American.

At this point, many staff members with Campus Crusade that are thinking about working with Destino may be facing a similar situation. For so long we have done ministry in a way that treats everyone the same. We don’t talk about race or ethnicity. But in so doing we have unknowingly and unintentionally communicated that everyone needs to be white.

What can you do today to begin to get to know someone from a different cultural background? How can you begin to value their cultural identity and how that is shaping the new American identity?
