Why Can’t We All Be Together?

Why Can’t We All Be Together?

So many times I hear the question, “Why can’t we all be together? Why do we have to have separate ministries (like Crusade and Destino)?” I think this is a great question and one we need to think theologically about. But in reality though, this is not what people are really asking.

Really, when most people ask that question, they are really saying, “Why can’t they just be White?” There’s a great segment from CNN’s Latino in America about a Catholic church struggling with this question. They are separated by culture and neither side, the Whites nor the Hispanics want to bend and budge to create a new third, “church”, culture.

Watch the video and see the woman cry because the Hispanics won’t become Anglo. She’s deeply moved by it. Desiring unity is good, but not at the cost of forcing someone else to adopt our culture.

(Note, the title of the video on YouTube is not really a great title. This section of “Latino in America” was obviously viewed as Anti-Catholic by the poster)

I believe God truly want us to be a church and ministry where there is no Jew, nor Greek, but all are one in Christ. But forcing people to be White (or Jewish) is not the way to accomplish unity. We need to acknowledge our unique cultures and talk about how those unique cultures influence the way we interact and worship God. From that starting point we can then work to create a new culture that truly reflects the kingdom of God.
